I have frequently noted in studying well-documented reincarnation cases, that transiting Saturn is in hard contact with the natal North Node (conjunct, square or opposed) when a past life memory emerges — either consciously or subconsciously.

Here are a few fascinating case examples for study:

The Case of John Elliotson and Dr. Norm Shealy

Dr. Norm Shealy, a world famous neurosurgeon, inventor, writer and specialist in pain management, was born on December 4, 1932 in Columbia, South Carolina (birth time unknown).

In January 1972, at age 39, while attending a lecture at the Neuroelectric Society in Aspen, Colorado, he learned about his past life as John Elliotson, a 19th century British physician who was also a medical trendsetter and pain specialist (Elliotson was born October 24, 1791 in Southwark, London; birth time unknown; he died July 29, 1868).

When Shealy heard the lecturer Dr. William Kroger say, “In the last century a British physician demonstrated that you could operate on patients who were mesmerized. His name was John Elliotson,” Shealy said he felt as if someone had thrust an iceberg down his back and said to himself, “My God, that’s me.”

Immediately after, Shealy contacted a medical librarian to learn about John Elliotson but no information could be found. Hence in June 1972, Dr. Shealy traveled to London to research Elliotson’s life.

Upon his arrival, he was intuitively guided with the same “iceberg down his back” sensation to the University College Hospital of London where his office had been as John Elliotson. Shealy said that as soon as he walked into the building he felt at home. Transiting Saturn was square the natal North Node in June 1972.

Similarities in both lives highlight the reoccurrence of transiting Saturn to Shealy’s natal North Node:

John Elliotson had striking black curly hair and walked with a congenital limp. He was also the first physician in London who did away with wearing knickers.

Around the age of 4 or 5, Norm Shealy wanted black curly hair so badly that he cut off a lock of his aunt’s black hair. At that same age he also declared he was going to be a physician.

At age 9, Shealy refused to wear knickers and said he threw temper tantrums in rebellion. He also fractured his right tibia bone, which led to an infection. That’s when he was told that he would always walk with a limp. At age 9, transiting Saturn was square the natal North Node.

At age 16, Shealy dyed his hair black when he went off to college. He also said that this age was when he always thought he was going to be a neurosurgeon. At age 16, transiting Saturn was opposed the natal North Node.

John Elliotson graduated medical school at age 19. Norm Shealy entered medical school at age 19. Shealy went on to teach at Harvard and became a world renowned pain specialist, duplicating the professional direction of John Elliotson.

I had a consultation with a new client the other day, who had had a severe problem with recurring bladder infections, continuously —non-stop— over the past five years. As soon as she would finish taking antibiotics and the symptoms cleared up, the bladder infection, would return. Miraculously however, over the past few months, she was astonished to observe that her bladder infection had not returned. It had vanished. It was gone! Read the entire essay here…

The Consultation Process: Talking About Health and Illness

With the recent passing of Lynn Redgrave and her eight-year battle with cancer, I was intrigued to study her horoscope and life events to understand what may have triggered the onset of her breast cancer diagnosis in 2002. It was within that year Redgrave found a lump in her breast. In December she was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a mastectomy in January 2003 and underwent chemotherapy.

According to Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer and the German New Medicine, the emotional conflict associated with the breast glands is a “nest conflict,” a worry or argument conflict (caring and nurturing) within what a woman considers to be her “nest.” In other words, her children, mother, pet, partner, home, workplace, etc. The worry can be over a concern of a loved one, or even being thrown out of her “nest.” The milk ducts of the breast are associated with a separation conflict, a sudden loss of physical contact or a conflict such as to say “my child, mother or partner has been torn from my breast.”

The Moon and the sign of Cancer rule over the breasts. In Redgrave’s natal horoscope (shown below; born on March 8, 1943 at 8:15 AM in London, UK; Ascendant 8 Aries 51), Jupiter in Cancer in the 4th house squares the natal Moon and the Ascendant (the health center of the body). The Moon rules over the 4th and 5th houses, over affairs involving one’s home life and children.

As I studied the three years leading up to her diagnosis in late 2002, the year 1999 stood out like a sore thumb: Solar Arc (SA) Pluto was conjunct Neptune (co-ruler of the 12th house of critical illness), SA Neptune=Moon, and SA Saturn=Sun! Throughout 1999, transiting Neptune and transiting Saturn were semisquare her natal Sun in the 12th house.*

*Please note: an overview of the astrological indicators of critical illness and a short introduction to Dr. Hamer’s work can be found in the essay “The Two-Year Clue,” May 2010.

I felt certain that 1999 was critical in understanding the emotional conflict that triggered her cancer diagnosis. I googled “Lynn Redgrave 1999” and sure enough, it was at that time that Redgrave learned that her husband John Clark of 32 years had fathered a child with his assistant, Nicolette Hanah in 1991 — the same woman who married their oldest son Benjamin four years later. John and Nicolette kept this secret until after Nicolette and Ben divorced.

Redgrave told The Times of London in 1999: “I can’t forgive him. There’s no way we can be back together. There’s no wavering on my part.”
She filed for divorce on March 1, 1999, and after the court trial moved from California with their three children and took up residence in Connecticut.

The emotional conflict may very well have been on-going throughout the years ahead. Her ex-husband John Clark wrote on his blog in September 2005 in reference to an upcoming interview with Lynn Redgrave by interviewer Robert Osborne:

“Robert, do me a favor now. Just ask her, as part of the interview, why she feels it necessary to keep my kids from me? It’s been 6 years since I heard from Kelly Clark, and 3 years since Annabel Clark, and over 1 year since Ben Clark. Ask her too why she feels it necessary to keep restraining orders in place to prevent me from even having a conversation with her — hence this website.”

The astrology supports on-going health concern as well:

In 2003/2004, SA Saturn was conjunct Pluto, SA Neptune was opposed Uranus (both planets, co-rulers of the 12th house) and transiting Saturn was square the Ascendant and the Moon.

In 2005, SA Mars (r. Asc) was opposed Neptune (co-r. 12th), with transiting Saturn opposed Mars.

In 2006, transiting Saturn was conjunct Pluto.

In 2007, SA Pluto opposed the Ascendant, with transiting Saturn square Uranus (co-r. 12th).

In 2008 and 2009 the measurements intensify with the extended transits of Pluto square natal Neptune, and Neptune semisquare the natal Ascendant and Moon. Transiting Neptune was also conjunct Mercury in the 12th house, and finally transiting Saturn was opposed the Sun, semisquare Pluto, and conjunct Neptune.

Other unexpected emotional conflicts may have contributed to her debilitation as well. Her brother had a sudden heart attack in June 2005 (he died in April 2010, just one month before Lynn Redgrave passed), and a little more than a year ago, her niece Natasha Richardson died suddenly from head injuries in a skiing accident.

Without speaking with Lynn Redgrave directly, we will never know how she perceived these conflicts the very moment they occurred, but life circumstances do support Dr. Hamer’s theories for an emotional conflict associated with the breasts. Perhaps Redgrave was unable to find
resolution and closure to the scandal that disrupted her family ‘nest’ and ended her 32-year marriage.

The technique and art of birth time rectification is one of the greatest challenges (if not the greatest) for astrologers — particularly when working with 1,440 minutes of birth time possibilities within a 24-hour day. It can certainly be daunting especially if we do not know where to begin, but, with practice and diligence, it can be managed. I was recently motivated to rectify the birth time of Judge Sonia Sotomayor after listening to her speak about her life, her mother and her childhood experiences, during her Supreme Court Confirmation Hearing in July 2009. Judge Sonia Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954 in the Bronx, New York; birth time unknown. Read the entire essay here.

So often in consultation with clients, I have found that the ruler of the Ascendant — its sign, house and condition — highlights an important storyline, an important thread that weaves it way throughout life development. Many times it allows the astrologer within minutes (if not seconds) to get right to the crux of the matter, to the heart of a very relevant theme within a client’s identity development. Barbra Streisand (born April 24, 1942 at 5:08 AM in Brooklyn, NY; Asc 8 Aries 22) was a guest this past Sunday at the White House as she was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. The honors recognize individuals who helped define American culture through the performing arts.

In light of this news, I was curious to take a look at Streisand’s horoscope. When I saw the lineup of Solar Arcs for 2009, all clumped together between August and November, I could only wonder what Streisand has planned for the coming year?!

SA Uranus conjunct Pluto (8/09)
SA Uranus square Sun (9/09)
SA Sun square Ascendant (10/09)
SA Pluto opposed Ascendant (11/09)

All of this leads right into transiting Pluto conjunct her Midheaven with the first hit in February 2010!

And if that weren’t enough, just slightly down the road in 2012, transiting Uranus will conjunct her Ascendant. Along with SA Midheaven opposed the Node!!!

Talk about a lineup of measurements! I researched the internet to get an inkling of what may lie ahead for Streisand, but to no avail. I didn’t find any concert dates, events or plans scheduled for 2009. What I did discover is that she does speak her mind in small, concise blog posts on her website particularly centered around the current election and her political point of view.

Looking more closely at 2009, the transit activity is slim to say the least. We do however see tr. Saturn opposed Venus ruling the 2nd and 7th houses coinciding with a minor SA of Saturn=Venus in the March/April time period. As well, the final hit of tr. Uranus square the Sun/Moon midpoint in March (and tr. Saturn square the Sun/Moon in August 2009). Marital concerns are certainly one strong possibility.

I would love to ask Barbra Streisand what she’s got cooking for the next 6 to 12 months ahead. Will she become more involved in politics? Produce or direct a new film? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps we’ll just have to wait and see.
